The right simulations when electricity is what drives you

Electromagnetics

Electromagnetics is applied in many products and fields.
Practical applications include:

  • inductors
  • electric motors
  • coils
  • magnetic bearings
  • actuators
  • sensors

All these have one thing in common: current flows through a conductor and generates a magnetic field. Depending on the application, the magnetic field is used to generate force or heat (direct or alternating current).

Simulation allows the resulting magnetic field to be determined. Besides the field strength, the direction vector is also obtained, for example.

Induction heating: temperature in the core, current flow in the coil

In coupled analyses, the heating of the components (Joule heating or induction heating) and the Lorentz forces are determined alongside the magnetic field.
Besides conduction, convection and radiation can also be taken into account. The forces and torques resulting from the electromagnetic fields are determined as well. The resulting vibration behaviour can be obtained from a coupled structural analysis.

Optimisation can be carried out through parameter studies — for example to optimise the power curve in induction heating and avoid hot spots, or to shape fields directionally using flux guides.
