When your problem is multidisciplinary

Analysis across multiple physical disciplines

A multiphysics analysis combines several analysis disciplines. This is particularly useful where the different physical effects influence one another. Examples include temperature-dependent material properties in current-carrying conductors, or flow behaviour in changing flow domains.

A multiphysics analysis generally couples at least two of the following disciplines:

  • structural simulation
  • flow simulation
  • thermal simulation
  • electromagnetic simulation
  • electrical simulation
  • multibody simulation

The applications for coupled analysis are wide-ranging, for example:

  • sloshing in tanks
  • flow-induced vibration of components, e.g. construction machinery in wind
  • induction heating
  • convective cooling of electronic components
  • thermal expansion of components with an inhomogeneous temperature field
  • cooling curves for vessels with a cooling medium
  • ...

The analyses can be carried out sequentially or with direct coupling.
